SpendScan works with receipts from any supermarket or grocery store that produces standard itemised receipts. Our AI has been tested with major chains including:
- United Kingdom: Tesco, Sainsbury's, Asda, Morrisons, Waitrose, Aldi, Lidl
- Germany: REWE, Edeka, Kaufland, Aldi, Lidl, Penny, Netto
- United States: Walmart, Whole Foods, Kroger, Safeway, Target

If your local supermarket isn't listed here, don't worry—our AI is designed to handle any standard receipt format. As long as your receipt shows items, prices, and totals clearly, SpendScan can process it.

Upload your receipts in any of these common formats:
- JPG / JPEG – Most common photo format
- PNG – High-quality images with transparency support
- PDF – Digital receipts (first page only)
📏 File Size & Quality Requirements
File Size
- Minimum: 100 KB
- Maximum: 10 MB
- Optimal: Under 5 MB
Image Quality
- Minimum resolution: 800×600 pixels
- Clear, focused text
- Good lighting (natural light preferred)
- Straight-on angle, not skewed
Our AI automatically checks image quality and will alert you if there are any issues like poor lighting, blur, or incorrect orientation, giving you a chance to take another photo.

SpendScan is a Progressive Web App (PWA) that works in all modern web browsers:
- Desktop: Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge, Opera
- Mobile: Safari (iOS), Chrome (Android), Samsung Internet
JavaScript must be enabled for the app to function. For the best experience, we recommend using the latest version of your preferred browser.
📱 Mobile & Installation
SpendScan is fully responsive and optimised for mobile devices. You can install it directly to your home screen on both iOS and Android for an app-like experience:
- iOS: Tap the Share button in Safari, then "Add to Home Screen"
- Android: Tap the menu in Chrome, then "Install App" or "Add to Home Screen"
Once installed, SpendScan works like a native app—fast, reliable, and with offline capability for viewing your existing data.
Note: We don't currently have separate native iOS or Android apps. Our Progressive Web App provides all the functionality you need across all platforms.

SpendScan automatically categorises your purchases into 14 default categories, including:
Vegetables, Fruits, Meat & Fish, Dairy & Eggs, Drinks, Tinned & Dried Goods, Sweets & Snacks, Healthy Snacks, Pantry Items, Bread & Pastries, Household Items, Deli, Frozen Foods, and Other.
You can also create your own custom categories to match your shopping habits. All category names are available in the 15 supported languages.

Export your data in multiple formats for use in other applications:

- Excel – Ready-to-use Excel workbook format
